I recently tried TOAF for the first time, bought the correct lead and joined pins 7 & 8, and it never worked.
The program connects to the car first time and thats it, I then get a connection module error message.

I bought this one, it isn't £3 but it is fully working with TOAF (after pin 7-8 joined).
No errors, all function works fine.

Does it need the pins bridging?

Fega72 is correct, bridge the pins with a dollop of solder or a very short bit of cable.

I bought a BMW INPA / K+CAN lead as I'd read somewhere that they worked out of the box... it didn't until pins 7&8 were bridged. OK, so it's not the £3 VAG lead but it's fine now.

I let XP* find its own drivers online (FTDI) and even though they were from 2013 they were newer than the drivers on the supplied disc - which my virus scanner gave the red light to. Yes, if you get a CDR from China with a copy of somebody else's hardware, best to virus scan it before opening anything!

Before the pin 7-8 bridging, it would not scan the car but it would talk to SRS and Jatco modules, enough for me to see that my airbag light was caused by the driver's pre-tensioner. After bridging, all fitted modules were visible.

I've seen lots of warnings to "backup before you change anything", and it's not obvious how you do this. If a module has a 'coding' tab, there will be a backup button on it I worked through all the modules and backed up any with a coding tab before even clearing any error codes!

* actually a real POSReady 2009 install, not just the registry hack - if you are still running XP, best to add the trivial registry addition to get later security updates. See here for details.
