Default What's the point of this??

I've been down this road before but never twigged until my mate pointed it out but can anyone tell me what's the point of this roundabout?

Surely it's just a bend

It isn't actually supposed to be there.

What happened is that when the builders were looking at the plans, one of them put a coffee mug down on the plan and it left a ring mark.

They probably intended linking to the top roundabout but ran out of money. No doubt they now call it a traffic calming measure.

BTW I used to umpire hockey matches up there quite a few years ago.

I expect that on the original plans there were another 200 houses in those two fields, just like on the second roundabout. Give it time and they will be there

Where do you think the saying, "Running round in Circles", comes from?

As said before, it is most likely part of a longer term plan of development in the area.

It's quite interesting looking at some plans, particularly local authority ones, where they are attempting to think about 30 years into the future and guessing what the transport requirements may be. If you can get hold of post-war plans for towns and the ring roads being devised and considered it's fascinating to see what many councils were dreaming up.

Oh, and if you have 10 minutes free then this is a great place to read a good history of motorways. It's debunks a few myths too....

Councils can be very sneaky. Junction 4a on the M3 was opened about 12 years or so ago. It is a completely pointless junction (very convienient for me tho' ) Lo' and behold we have now have got plans for a vast distribution depot next to the junction and continuous expansion of Farnborough Airport. Guess what, the new entrance to it is near the 4a junction. Although both issues are going through the consultation process, I can't help thinking that it was always planned to go ahead and that's why they built the junction.
