If I press the mode button the same thing happens again.

Sounds like the machine is seeing the stick but can't read the contents.
I would try a different USB stick and see what happens

Hi Jeff,
I have managed to shoot a video of what happens but don't know how to upload it.
The video is in the 3GPP Audio/Video format.
Can you advise please?
Many thanks
Tom

If you have a YouTube or Photobucket account you can upload it to these and then copy and paste the link into this thread.
If you want to send me the video direct from your phone my mobile number is in my signature below

If I May intervene a Little and offer some ideas.
there are 2 Different types of MP3 Files , But before we go there can you put other files on there? Maybe a jpeg (photo) or MPEG4. To see if it is reading those?

The reader seems to be okay as Jeff suggests. It is seeing the stick but not reading either the files or the format.
Based on that Video it really seems to be format. Are you EJECTING DEVICE After Formatting? Is your Computer Windows or Apple?

The story so far, I have tried a relatively old usb stick formatted in fat32, first with wma files and then with mp3 files neither oof which worked.
Then at Jeff's suggestion I tried a different usb stick this time a more modern one once again formatted in fat32, and got exactly the same results.
Regards
Tom

Sorry, I forgot to answer a couple of your questions. I am using windows 7, I am ejecting the stick in the correct fashion.
But still no luck, I will try and see if it will recognise a jpeg file.
Best regards
Tom

I am using the front usb input, I haven't been able to try an sd card as yet. But have one coming in the post, hopefully today. Once that comes I will format that and give that a try. I am not very happy with the idea of the usb lead protruding from the front of the head unit, to easy to get knocked.
Best regards
Tom
