Default Air conditioning not working

I've recently had the aircon regassed but it doesn't seem to be cooling now.
The compressor was a bit noisey but it seems to have got quieter.
The car is a diesel, there doesn't appear to be any fan running under the bonnet when the air-conditioning is on is this normal?
Cheers

Do you have the original old silver resister still fitted?

Visible through the radiator grill.

the chances the resistor has blown you need to change for the so called gold resistor.no not attempt to run the air con until the fan is fixed

I've been searching resistors, but there seems to be two and three speed versions how do I tell ?
I don't think the object I saw I'd a resistor as it says its at two o'clock on the fan but I can't see anything there

Just been browsing net and found a site which said run engine and switch on rapid demist and fan should run at high speed and if it doesn't system needs regassing.
If this is correct where is the most common place for leaks? The compressor has been quite noisey recently especially when kicking in on auto mode.
Is it worth changing this and the condenser or does that require the cooling system to be drained ?

If you don't have a resistor fitted, you have a 3 speed fan. To test, aircon off, ignition on, press demist, fan should run. If it doesn't, then you need to fit new bushes to the motor or replace. Alternatively, fit a 2 speed resistor as per my link from Jules
I'm sure one of the more informed members like Simon will be along soon with valuable advice
