Default Diesel Black Smoke

Good evening all,

I am hoping someone can help me. I've have just come back from a weekend away & I have a very concerning issue.
Driving down to Shuttleworth on Fri I had no issues, but today my car is down on power & pours black smoke on hard acceleration.
I am presuming it will be intercooler/hose leak but otherwise I'm not sure what to look for. I have had the elbow pop off last summer and that is a completely different experience to today. The upper intercooler hose has been replaced with a silicon one, as has the O rings with vitons.
I am very concerned as I had no issues friday but do now.

Many thanks in advance,

Rob

Default Down on power

Have you ever changed the PCV filter? If not this may be the cause of your problem. Fairly quick fix.

Thanks for the reply.
I didn't replace the pcv filter on the last service as it wasn't due, although I am, severely tempted just to rule it out.

Hi Rob.
I would double check the O-rings or its connection as it sounds like that, also check the jubilee clips on the joints, start at the EGR and work your way down, looks for splits in the hose.

Thanks Arctic,

I shall check it out tomorrow, hopefully it'll be that. A nice reasonably easy fix. We'll maybe not easy! I'm reasonably sure it won't be the silicon intercooler hose, but you never know.

When the O rings fail it’s normally a lot of black smoke that you see in your rear view mirror

Good afternoon all,

It looks like the o rings have deformed. I shall order some replacements. Its annoying as I will have to remove the bumper to do - I had to use a nut and bolt on the elbow last year - but the trouble is I've had the wings resprayed and illl be scared of scratching them!

Intercooler O-rings can be changed with removed the bumper, remove the bend along with the hose, once off the car remove bend from the hose wipe clean add new viton O-rings add a little red rubber grease t0 the )-rings, wipe clean inside the intercooler where the bend fits, fit the bend first making sure it is fully pushed home listed for the thud as it its the stop, fit 8mm bolt to hold bend to the radiator, now fit the hose and the jubilee clip so you can tighten it from above using a long screwdriver, job done link below.

Its annoying as I will have to remove the bumper to do - I had to use a nut and bolt on the elbow last year.

Feel the pain, there may be other issues that could but not limited to a leaking intercooler end cap leaking, FBH sensor wiring damaged fins on the intercooler left corner (As you look at the front) Many possibilities, but fingers crossed that it's an easy fix for you !

Thanks Roger,

I'm reasonably certain it's just the o ring as I can see it coming out of the joint.
