On a 1.8, it's the post catalyst one.
What fault message do you see?
The catalyst is more prone to fail than the lambda.

If it's an 04 or later car the fault code can be a bit a red herring depending on if the car has had the proper later ecu updates applied ;-)
Fault codes read on generic diagnostics sometimes are different to the manufacturers codes.
There was a problem with the earlier engine tune that caused error codes to show up reporting lambda problems that may cause damage to the cat.
Many cars have not had the updated tune applied even if they've supposedly been serviced by a main dealer ;-)

With the updated tune this fault disappears ;-)

What are you using to read them? ;-)

I'm using one of those cheap obd readers off the bay. It's main use is to Bluetooth coolant temp to a mobile!phone display I have rigged up on a permanent basis utilising the torque pro obd app, but it is also useful as a fault code reader and clearer.
I recently replaced the cat but also fitted a new secondhand o2 sensor downstream of the cat as the wiring on the original was quite fragile.
In the last 1500 miles the engine warning light has come on three times, each time the same fault and the same sensor.
Russ-the car in question is an 04 plate 1.8 and was bought off Marinabrian so I guess the ECU was suitabley up to date if its possible to do this on a T4?.
Problem here is that two variables were introduced at once: the new s/h sensor and a new cat.
T cut- immsorry but I can't give the exact read out as I have now cleared the fault! Will keep a note next time it occurs.
I am rather leaning towards it being the replacement sensor. Maybe I should get the soldering iron out and repair the original one and stickmthat back on?

I was just going to say that lambda faults can be due to the catalyst failing, but seems not so in this case.

had same fault on 2.5 V6, it was water in the connecting plug for the sensor , a quick blow with a airline / wd40, erased fault code, job done, JOHN.
