Default OAT, the innocent victim?

This kind of dramatic failure seems to occur on the 1.8T engine. It is rarely found, if at all, on the standard 1.8, the KV6 or the diesel, all of which also use OAT antifreeze.

The clean lines of the splits in these hoses are interesting. Why, I wonder, would an assumed chemical reaction result in that? The hose in the first picture looks almost as if a patch had been applied.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's usually the top hose (on the 1.8T) which fails isn't it? What about the others? Why not the heater supply hose for example?

I know that it's reassuring to seize on something to blame which is easy and cheap to replace, but it's really just an assumption that is being made. The evidence actually points to the opposite conclusion for the reasons I've given above.

Default OAT, released without charge

That evidence clearly does not point to OAT being responsible as has been suggested.

My 2003 car is exactly the same. All original hoses. 50/50 OAT antifreeze changed once in its life.---- Has never had a single drop of extra coolant added. Not one drop.

I confess here that it might get a 6 monthly look at.--------I know, I know but it is always exactly the same level.

Probably get a burst hose now through tempting fate.--
