No offence take here could of been worse
I wonder if it's text language. People are speaking as they see and there doesn't seem to be the focus on grammar like wot we had. I also get hot under the collar when people don't seem to know whether the 'bought' something or 'brought' it. Also they don't borrow from people anymore but lend it from them. The worlds gone mad!!

I had two English teachers. Both were Welsh. With Liverpudlian tendencies. And both had a hatred of subjunctive coagulating associative clauses. Hence the absence of such in my first three sentences. Now in normal, but hopefully just as easily understood, proper English:
My teachers had stunningly archetypical Welsh speech patterns, difficult to understand for a young scouser fully to grasp. They also were determined to instil courtesy and manners into the language of behaviour of their whacker charges. They viewed the uninvited correction of grammmmar an’ spellllin’ (that’s how they pronounced it) as ungentlemanly. As they were at least three times my age, they are more than likely to have gone on to a heavenly Cardiff Arms Park so the preceding lapse of gentlemanly conduct will be unlikely to draw rebuke. Aaaagghhh Edit. Just heard on Daily Politics: Eurovision organisers have refused to allow the Welsh National flag for being political. I think that's ungentlemanly.

I use conjunctions sometimes, especially to give extra emphasis within my sentences. But I do use them sparingly! and i'll try not to add one here!

I must admit, I don't even open some threads on here if the OP hasn't even bothered to get the thread title correct.
I absolutely despair at some of the spelling and grammar that I see on here (and other forums it must be said, it's certainly not limited to this one). Whilst some may be excused as they're using phones, even they these days have a full "Qwerty" keyboard, so there's really no excuse for doing things like using "u" instead of 'you' or "ur" instead of 'your' (or you're). It's just pure laziness and makes me wonder if I can be bothered to read a post, even if it's a valid opinion I'm likely to dismiss it because of the standard of English used. When I was at school, I too was subject to a far more disciplined way of learning, especially in English and maths lessons, and mistakes were punished swiftly and usually in front of the whole class, so you tended to try harder not to make them in the first place lest you be hauled, usually by the ear lobe, to the front of the class. As harsh as that may sound, it meant that every person in that class tried their utmost not to make any mistakes, and that's something that's stayed with me ever since. Besides which, most modern technology be it phone, tablet or computer comes with built in spell checkers, so there's really no excuse. Although, of course, they can't really help with grammar. |
