Exhaust very smoky for a mile or two after start-up then clears.
Hi, folks,
Problem has just started on my 1.8T: on start-up, exhaust is normal for a few seconds then smoke coming out of exhaust. More throttle and it comes out like a smoke-screen. Drive car for a mile or two and the smoke is then much reduced - I would say to almost nothing - and continues like that for rest of 10-mile journey, one hour break, and 10 miles back ... . I also notice that on depressing throttle there is no obvious increase in acceleration that I have been previously used to when the turbo kicks in. Car still accelerates reasonably well but just doesn't have that oomph! I do hear a fan (turbo fan, I assume) on depressing throttle. Left overnight, same symptoms as above. Oil level was down quite a bit when I checked the dipstick, and coolant level was slightly down. Topped up and restarted today but no difference in symptoms on start-up. So, I would welcome comments as to what has happened to my 1.8T and recommendations about a reasonably priced mechanic/engineer who really knows what he's doing with 1.8T servicing and repairs, within 50 miles or so of Oxford, if possible. TIA

Thanks for the reply. What did you pay for that, Steve?

Yep, sounds like the turbo - had the same symptoms with mine. £330 for a re-manufactured turbo from Midland Turbos and about £100 to fit.
