KV6 Rattle but VIS or manifold
Hi everyone
This is my first post and I,ll start with an apology. Despite searching the archive I have not found an answer tomy problem but given the number of posts reagrding V6 rattles i,m sure it must have been talked about before. Anyway enough waffle. I purchased a 2004 2.5 V6 in December and found that it had a terrible rattle (all of the time) diagnosed inlet manifild and or VIS motors. I purchased new manifold and motors (e-bay) and replaced. My problem is that on starting the car from cold I have still got an annoying rattle, sounds very similar to the earlier problem but not as loud. If I rev the engine and or when it ahs run for about 90 seconds the noise goes and the engine is sweet. Performance seems ok, ticks over at 1000rpm when cold and then drops to 500rpm when warm. Does anyone have any ideas as the car sounds awful from cold and I am concerned that I have an issue which could turn into an expensive repair. Thanks for reading this. Possum |

I get a little rattle when I start the car. It sounds like it's comming form the engine when I'm in the car however when I get out I can hear it's comming fomr the exhaust where it meets the down pipe from the engine.
It's only a small rattle and goes after a min or so. Could this be your problem. Also your VIS motors will reset when you start the car. If the switch is faulty it can click quite a bit. This is not normally that loud.

I also get a noise on cold start-up which goes after a few minutes. It is more of a "tingly" rather than "rattly" sound if I can describe it that way - like a piece of sheet steel secured at one end and vibrating against something at the other. Its difficult to detect where it's coming from.

Above 1000rpm when cold is normal but 500 when cold is too low. Are you sure that there is the same kind of rattle and not rather a ticking (tappet noise) ? Can you upload a file with that noise ?

Sounds like it's the Idle Solenoid - I had the same issue recently.

I also have a rasping/rattle sound coming from the engine area when cold, goes away after a small time and then when still could when pulling away arounf 1800rpm i get a rattle, i would assume it is a heat shield on the exhaust system. But againit goes away when the engine is up to temp. Looks like it is a standard V6 problem.

Hi everyone
Many thanks for your suggestions. I did take the time this morning to have another listen. I also did a basic hands on check of the idle solenoid and the purge vavle, no vibes present. In fact whislt doing this it appeared to me that the noise was coming from the area around the alternator. Again it is only when cold and has gone by the time I have travelled 100 yards to my first junction. I will try and get a recording at the weekend and if I master the technology put it on for your thoughts. And I will check over the exhaust. Once again many thanks, I will Keep you posted. Possum |
