Rover 75 Auto V6 2.0 Difficulty in Selecting Gears

I'm having difficulty in selecting gears without some serious 'waggling' backwards and forwards of the selector lever. Once engine started from P, I can easily find 2nd and 3rd - but selecting D, N, R and P can take up to five minutes. Lever just moves backwards and forwards loosely but nothing seems to change.

Indicator on dashboard display shows the correct gear selection letter when I do manage to change the selection

Otherwise, once on the move, gearbox works perferctly (inlcuding reverse)

Does this sould like a fault of the Gear Selector mechanism or something more serious

Please help !

I'd be tempted to replace the selector with a cheapo from a scrappy just to see if that fixes it.
