Diesel Service

MOT is due soon and like many am worried about it.
I'm going to service the car before the test and thinking about the emissions.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but the plan is:-
1) Fuel filter,Air filter, Oil and Oil filter change, (Genuine parts)
2) ERG clean.
3) Additive to clean injectors.

The first two I do anyway but the additive will be a new thing to my service list,
question is :-
Will this be enough to beat the emissions test?
What additive will be best to use?
Is there anything else I can do?

Hi Al,
You don't say what mileage you're on, but if you haven't changed the pcv filter that's one thing to look at. If your car passed on emissions last year there is no reason why it shouldn't pass now. A lot has been said about how the emissions test will affect our cars but most of it isn't correct. My car sailed through its mot under the new rules with just an oil and filter change beforehand.

For the injector cleaner I would use one of the following:

I use the Millers item every 3-6 months and use Millers Ecomax fuel treatment most tankfills.

Use the performance of the engine in everyday driving, especially when accelerating - it's probably the best thing one can do to a diesel engine apart from regular servicing.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your reply. The mileage I've got is just over 220,000. As for the PCV, I changed it for the BMW filterless version about 7 years back. Have'nt touched it since.

Mine failed on emissions or smoke or whatever first time last year - I did exactly that for the re-test, and it passed

I always give it a good run with plenty of revs and get it hot before the test, mine had done 190K and went straight through on the first run up as a fast pass.

The plan is still to do what I originally said but still have a question if I may.

To members who's diesel failed the MOT thu emissions.

What additive did you use if any and how did you get an MOT pass?

The object of this exercise is to determine the memberships concensus of opinion to the best additive.

Personally I've used Redex for the past 3 yrs. When I change the fuel filter I fill the filter with the redex prior to fitting. When I've completed the service, start the car run for about 30 seconds, then leave overnight.

Start the car in the morning let it idle for a few minutes to clear the c**p out then Drive It Like I Stole it & all has been ok.

Mine has 285,000 ish on the clock & went through this year with no advisories
