This enabled the battleships HMS Rodney and King George 1V to catch her and bombard her to destruction, even after a heavy pounding Bismarck would not sink until the heavy cruiser Dorsetshire fired torpedos and scuttling charges on Bismarck set off.

Only 3 survivors were left from HMS Hood as her magazines exploded, the Bismarck had about 2200 men on board and only about 100 odds survived, in fact some were left in the water as there was a U boat scare and the ships picking up Bismarcks survivors aborted the rescue.

Heavy loss of life on both HMS Hood and KMS Bismarck.
And the floating war machine had only been operating for a week .

You will find those who have and still serve do not glory in taking life and very rarely talk about their experiences on active service.
We should also remember thnose of the merchant marine who also gave their lives to keep this country free, no glorious battles for them just conveys and praying that you make it back to port.

As a ex serviceman I can tell you your average sailor or soldier doesnt want to kill but today you can sit in a office and with a joystick guide a drone to its target and it there is collateral damage bad luck. then you sign off and go off to the pub for a drink.
Thats war by wire and evoid of any true emotion they might as well be playing video games

Still arguing as to whether the Bismark was sunk or they pulled the plug to end the misery.

Two trains of thought on that one going by wiki etc.

Either way its fate was sealed.

Russ Ballard found the wreck some years ago .

He of Titanic fame.

Ghouls by whatever name in my opinion they are war graves and should be respected as such, these men died trying to escape the enivitable and deserve to rest in peace. its not about history but how much can we get for these souvenirs

IIRC Ballard didn't disclose the location of Bismarck, Mearns recorded it later on when he located Hood. Hood's bell has recently been recovered and now sits in the Battle of Jutland Museum:

http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and...bell-recovered

Both sites are classed as war graves.

Thank you for the links as a old sailor seeing the bell brought a tear to my eye it was said there is no grave for family to visit and lay flowers on, their graves and those who sailed under the red duster are held in the arms of our mother the sea
