Broken Bottom Pulley, and again 2 days later. Help please
Hi All.
Can somebody please help me.... I have a 2litre Diesel Auto Connie Saloon. 11 months ago I had a new bottom pulley put on by my local garage, never had any problems, pulled a 25ft caravan 3 times on a 600 mile round trip, taken me to work every day.. until Monday afternoon, I was pulling out of work and there was a racket from under the bonnet, on checking I found out my bottom pulley was at an acute angle, so I got the AA to tow me to my local garage who put the pulley on in the first place. he stripped the car down and showed me the pulley. now its a Metal Pulley with an inner rubber collar then a metal shaft to go over the end of the Crank. The Pulley had completely broken away from the inner rubber sort of twisted loose, so he got me another Pulley under warranty, fitted it and I drove the car home, (That was yesterday Evening) this morning I set off for work and after a mile my Generator light came on and I lost my power steering, I managed to limp back to my local garage again and leave the car there for when they open. (I telephoned them and explained what had happened) I went to see my garage on the way home tonight to pick up a Courtesy car. he told me the pulley has gone again!!!!! He is going to fit another under warranty, but doesn't know what has caused two pulleys to break.... he said it may be the tensioner... BUT was it the tensioner that damaged the first pulley that had done 10 months no trouble, OR was it the Pulley breaking that has damaged the tensioner.. He doesn't know if it is the tensioner yet has he has not stripped it down... Has anybody Please got any ideas or have heard of this happening before.. Any Help Sincerely Appreciated. |

These pulleys handle a lot of vibrational load and need to be up to the job. Basicaly there are pulleys and there are pulleys. A high quality OEM grade replacement costs a lot. You can get cheap ones from eBay that will fail in no time. They do usually last more that two days though. I can't see a worn tensioner ruining a new high quality pulley in 48 hours.
These have a good press: http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/cranksha...0l-p-4521.html TC Last edited by T-Cut; 23rd July 2014 at 16:03.. |

Their filters and service bits are usually great, but their moving components have a bit of a flakey rep. Unfortunately with this job, the best option is the OEM pulley. Others do last well - I've had good success with mine - but to find a good aftermarket item you may have a few 'duffers' from various brands first.
