Hi Steve.
I intend to fit the original ones, if they lasted 18 yrs they can't be bad hopefully they will arrive by Friday coming.
Glad to hear you came out of it smiling, would appear brakes are the in thing at the moment. I had a similar thing some years ago, but discovered at MOT,so I changed to copper all round and Pagid hoses. But considering the original were at least 18yrs old they had done well! Thanks again for your help when you have problems of your own....Caskin

Default Removal of snapped bleed nipple.

Ok so once i had taken the original caliper off my car with the snapped bleed nipple and got it on the work bench i started my plan to remove the nipple.

First job was to drill it out a little maybe about 7mm in depth, using a 4mm drill bit.
1

2

3

You really need to be careful you do not bottom out with the drill or you will damage the seat inside the caliper.

I then heated up the nipple and surrounding area, for about 3 mins then gave the nipple a quick tap with a small pin hammer.
4

heated it again and cooled it down with some plus gas, repeated this twice more then on the last heat up i tapped into the drill 4mm hole a 25 torx.
5

heated and cooled it down a few more times with the torx added. then applying heat i quickly used the small socket on the torx and felt the nipple more a little.
6

I then tightened it back up a little more heat did the same, undo a bit then tighten done this about six times.
7

Finally i could remove it with my fingers
8

9

Really happy the system with the torx worked, as you can see inside the seat it was quite rusty.
10

Caliper will now be refurbished along with the NS one once that as been removed, and put in the stores box

Pulled on the drive checked the brake fluid below minimum, so topped it up started car again pumped the brake pedal and heard a pop, no fluid in the reservoir, jacked car up drivers side and found this below.

So was really lucky i was not traveling at speed when it gave way, another job to take car of once the weather changes
Wow. These unions were down as an advisory on my MOT last November. The garage advised there was no hurry too get them fixed, but should be done within 6 months, so I'm thinking I need new brake pipes at the front this summer. Back brake pipes are copper.

Hi Rob.
I would check the hoses too especially where the joint is as in the photo below.

1

You can see the corrosion that can be hidden behind the rubber.
2

I am wondering if using jet wash in the wheel arch could add to this problem along with salt on the roads. ?

As you can see the rubber seal is just that around the hose and the metal joint.
3

Through the corrosion the hose was just blasted apart.
4

I have now refurbished another caliper for the NS which i hope to fit the weekend, also refurbished the original i took off.

5

6

Original caliper.
7

Also two new back calipers
8

The work continues i still have the seat air bag lights to deal with that's another thread

Just to bring this thread up to date, i managed to purchase another decent NS caliper, and cleaned that up nicely also.

1

Now fitted to the car and working well.
2

I checked the old hose
3

Pulled the rubber protector down and all was fine so only the OS had bad corrosion, but even so i would recommend changing out the two hoses at the same time if yours ever fails or looks like they need changing.
4

The original NS caliper is now also cleaned and painted.
5

PS air bag light sorted now as well.

Thats a good front end brake overhaul completed Steve

Did you venture down the route of buying a flaring tool or did you get a garage to renew your metal brake pipes

Hi Steve.
Not as yet as in post 27 i rang the MOT garage i use and spoke to Mark, and they said they could do it for £125 so that is the plan at the moment, but yet again i may just get a flaring tool, i have until 14 April before the mot.
