Thanks Steve for the story so far and the excellent pictures.

My experience with the rear brake pipe to hose was similar, my clip mangled like yours but I made a replacement from an old brake shoe retainer clip. I've used my Irwin set quite a lot since you recommended them and the brake pipe to hose connection was the first time the Irwin's let me down. But working under the car was perhaps more difficult than in the wheelarch.

Are you going to try and get the bleed nipple out (how, heat mole-grips) or just get another caliper from your ample stock?

Looking at the condition of the metal brake pipe Steve , I would think it is an opportune time to change that out as well while you have got the brake system empty of fluid

Hi Mike.
I intend to try and get the nipple out, through drilling & heat using maybe a small torx inserted, i do not have any spare calipers , two years ago i had three sets in a box which i was going to refurbish never got round to it and threw them away

The pipe is solid enough just looks a bit weathered, as i purchased four new hoses my plan is to get it back on the road asap put it through it's MOT in March, then come spring early summer change out the other three hose and maybe fit new calipers at each corner.

I may have to change out the caliper yet but will see how the nipple removal goes.

I had a bleed nipple shear off last year on a back caliper, I used heat and a rust penetrator as it was cooling, took three attempts but it did come out ... thankfully. I was hoping to change all the bleed nipples as I had brought them but then decided it was a job for another day, still to come I'm afraid.

Also having a great talk with a man whom knows more than most of us put together early this evening, i will be changing out the front brake pipes, and if the bleed nipple with not play the game, i will be changing out the calipers for some MG6 ones, big thank you to Mr (MB) really enjoyed our chat as always great info along with some good laughs.


Rear hoses also arrived safely.

The state of play now fore the snapped bleed nipple is this below, Friday i managed to pick up spare OS front caliper, £20 from WLMGF's while there before i paid for it Jeff made sure that the nipple would undo ok, and the little bit of hose that had been cut off also would loosen ok, both did so part was purchased.

It need to be cleaned up so later in the day early evening i started to clean the caliper up.

Using broken scissors blade, and wire wheel in a drill.

sprayed with WD40 and rubbed dry makes them look dark grey.

That is the carrier done, so next the caliper needs to get the same treatment, which i will do the next day, which is today 26/2/22

WD40 rubbed and sliders rubber greased and inserted.

Just need to changed over the bleed nipple and hose.

Now the old caliper needs to be removed from the car.

Side by side original on the left blue, and replacement left, gun metal grey.

Hose swapped over as it was previously fitted to the car the other day.

Clean the pads up a little before fitting them into the replacement caliper.

I gave my MOT garage a ring a spoke to them about what happened and what i was intending to do change over the calipers and pipe work as i have two new rear calipers thanks to Martyn (Squire) who comes to the Nano meets another spare caliper on it's way to me for the NS. also new hoses and bleed nipples.

The garage whom i do trust said that they would change out the calipers and hoses plus pipe work for £125 so that is what i decided to do, save me working on my back on a cold floor off axle stands

Therefore the pipe was cleaned up and the caliper fitted to the car, bleed the system so i can now drive the car to the garage, which is booked in for three weeks time.

Superb pics and info as usual Steve, fitting a new front caliper myself along with new hose. My fitting doesn't seem to have that clip in your picture, must've rotted away 🤔

Hi Ron.
yes yours looks like its been repaired before and the clip is missing, the clips helps pull the hose upwards so the stars/serrated edge is pulled through into the bracket as per photo below.
