Thanks Steve for the story so far and the excellent pictures.

My experience with the rear brake pipe to hose was similar, my clip mangled like yours but I made a replacement from an old brake shoe retainer clip. I've used my Irwin set quite a lot since you recommended them and the brake pipe to hose connection was the first time the Irwin's let me down. But working under the car was perhaps more difficult than in the wheelarch.

Are you going to try and get the bleed nipple out (how, heat mole-grips) or just get another caliper from your ample stock?
