Default Dual SIM Smartphones

Anybody got one and are they any good? Mate has a Samsung Galaxy Y Duos surplus to requirements and asked if I want it.

I've had a few - work sim and personal sim in together, saves carrying two phones!

You just select the sim to use when dialling out or texting, or set one to be the default.

Data is only available via one sim if I remember.

Handy bit of kit

I have had one for a couple of years and find it a great bit of technology.

My reason is I live in the Cotswolds and no provider gives 100% coverage. I did a check and found most areas that Vodafone don't cover EE do so I can usually get a signal.

The best bit for me is I have mine on auto divert so if somebody tries to ring me on one number and there is no signal is transfers to the other number if that one does have a signal.

Got the phone off him today, not a mark on it. Letting it charge at the moment before I start experimenting!

I've been using dual sim phones for several years, would never go back to a single sim phone now. You may find the two sim slots use two different size sim cards, more so the newer phones.

You can have two different network providers if you like, both sim cards are active at the same time, you can even have one on contract and one PAYG. Normally dual sim phones have sim slot one as 4G and slot two 3g, data is best used in sim slot one, the older dual sim phones are 3g and 2g.

The only drawback running two sim cards in one phone when both are active is battery drain, but I have never found this a problem. You can still use just one sim in a dual sim phone, just put the sim card in slot one for best results.

Wee update: the convenience of dual SIM phones is a great idea but one isn't, Jesus, its painfully slow to do anything. Gone back to two phones again.

Steve, the slowness has nothing to do with the dual sim side of things, your mate has given you a 7 year old phone with old outdated specification. The Samsung Y Duo was released back in 2012, its running a very old android 2.3 operating system, only single core, just 832MHz processor, a very poor 290MB RAM, and a measly 512MB memory.

Its a shame your first experience with a dual sim phone has been with such old technology, can I advise you to get something newer and try again, I doubt you will be disappointed the second time.

I know its the phone itself Wes, know its old tech but slow isn't the word for it. I may see if I can pick up a newer one.

I used to use a dual SIM phone for work a while back, but now only have one number to use.
I do have a Redmi 5+ though which has two SIM card slots, the second slot can be used for SIM number 2, or a micro SD card which I do, expanding the storage capacity for photos etc.
I believe a lot of Chinese phones now have this option.
