Rover Deer Ding

On my journey home tonight, what looked like a large deer jumped out of the central reservation and into my path. It was a split second and I caught the deer on the nearside front.

The result was presumably one injured or dead deer and one wrecked Rover.

I couldn't see any sign of the deer but I reported it via www.deercollisions.co.uk. Tried to report it to the local cop shop but they are not taking calls.

I am not sure the car is economically repairable. It needs a bumper, bonnet, wing and nearside headlight. I suspect there may be further damage inside the engine bay.

Seems bad luck is following me about at the moment! I will need to report it to the insurers, but I suspect they will write it off immediately.

Oh great, they tend to make a mess of a vehicle when that happens.

Why report it to your insurers?

Buy a wing headlight and bumper, and have it fixed with a few hour fettling without having your insurance premiums hiked through the roof

Thanks Brian. I did think about this but was concerned that it more damage may be lurking behind the mess. The headlight is pushed right up into the engine bay.

Is it driveable? If so why not contact Mickeyboy to assess if it’s repairable.

As for telling you insurer, I am pretty sure that any payout will be greatly outweighed by your premium hikes.

Luckily you were not hurt, shame about the deer, and a lost lunch.

The car is definitely repairable, it's only external and with the contacts in this Club, achievable. Go for it.

It seems to drive OK. I have a friend who runs a body shop in nearby Wickford. I'll speak with him tomorrow to see if he can look it over for me. If the inner wing isn't fooked then I may take Brian's advice and buy the starlight silver panels off the Bay of Flea. They might be reasonable match.

This is all very frustrating. The car has new brakes, a new clutch master and a new set of tyres. Still, I suspect this is now the least of the deer's concerns. The impact was around 30mph, so I doubt if it would have survived.

Remember everything is designed to crumple in that area when you hit a "pedestrian" and usually the bolt on bits are easy enough to source and fit.

Take the bumper off and see what has happened to the headlamp, or if the car is driveable, and I'm assuming the car is, then take a run over to see Mickyboy.......he's fixed a lot worse

My last encounter with a deer was just after I got off a plane in USA. I was in the passenger seat and the locals told me that had I been in a saloon, rather than an MPV, the antlers would have been straight through the windscreen into my face and chest!!! It literally spun around, hitting every panel down the side. There were hoof marks on them! When I arrived at my destination, I got some stick for not bringing it "home" for dinner!

When I lived in Norfolk and hit a deer (muntjac) i was lucky everything just popped back into place and was left with nothing more than a dent.

When I was in the ZT and hit a badger at 70 it was a mess, bumper, headlight, radiator, aircon pipes etc turned out to be a border line write off.
