Default £750 + VAT to replace a head gasket...

Just been quoted £750 + Vat to replace the head gasket and water pump... seems a little high to me? The car hasn't overheated and its an external failure but the garage say the head will be skimmed whether it needs it or not, and that the cylinder liners will most likely need replacing to... and to add insult to injury the garage owners professional opinion involved a box of matches and a petrol can, or Ebay. So im now left wondering what to do?

I had mine done last week, new head gasket, head skim, water pump and cam belt, new oil and filters and head bolts for 390 quid including vat. That was Dibdale autos in Dudley. Very reliable garage with a good knowledge of k series engines.

I have to say that even that sounds expensive to me!

Pretty sure that one of the Specialists will do it for a maximum of £300!

After all 1.8's are quick and easy to work on!

It's sad but most garages quite high in the hopes you will scrap the car, also when you go in for a simple service it's immediately HGF

Sorry, but £900 to do a head gasket on a 1.8 is taking the **** and the Dealer clearly didn't want the business!

If the car has not over heated where or what is the "External failure"and also if it has not over heated why the need to skim the head and replace the liners

Me thinks that the garage are extracting the urine
