Diagnosis please.........
A few months ago I noticed a slight "groan" noise what sounded like from the front offside wheel. It has gradually got louder, not there when stationery when engine idling so methinks not engine related. Noise not there all the time, sometimes when i accelerate i hear it, when I slow down the noise goes. I can drive for miles and not hear it, but when I have to slow down then accelerate I can hear it..... it is now louder than it first was.
Front brakes are new, I have had the front discs reglased but the noise was there before they were done. I have took the car to 2 garages and they took the car for a test drive but could not hear anything. Could it be the wheel bearing? Or drive shaft? Your thoughts please gentlemen.....

Sounds like it may be wheel bearing related - Do you know how to do the wobble test?
Raise the car and secure on ramps/stands. Grab the wheel at 3/9 and pull side to side to feel for play, I tend to do this and at 6/12 turn the wheel and test again. You can also sometimes feel a rumble through the spring if held and spin the wheel. https://axleaddict.com/auto-repair/W...-wheel-bearing |

I was thinking along the wheel bearing too, I have the car booked in for a check up, wheel bearing/drive shafts etc....any loose bits and pieces etc..etc..

You won't always have freeplay in a worn wheel bearing or even hear a noise from it when spinning the wheel by hand.
When you hear the noise, have you tried turning corners? does the sound change? It does sound like wheel bearing to me too but by doing the above, it will give you a better idea if it is wheel bearing & which side It's coming from. |

Could be the outrigger bearing on the driveshaft if you only hear it when you have your foot on the loud pedal.

Sorry, but could it not be related to the power steering pump and low oil?
Just a shot in the dark.

Hmmm, this doesn't sound like wheel bearing to me in that case.
I was going to suggest AC Compressor & Kaiser has a point about the PAS pump & oil level but both of these would usually be noisy when stationary (engine running). Mike Noc's suggestion of outrigger bearing is worth checking out. I'm also wondering if you may be hearing the "groaning" noise from either the hydramount or the lower tie/engine mount? (as you're saying It's on the O/S front). |
