Default Diesel engine won't start

Car has been in my garage for the last few weeks, and has only had light rain on it this morning - however, drove to local garage (1 mile) for pre-arranged inspection on their hoist. Entrance to local garage does have a short steep slope.

Afterwards drove to local shops, (1.5 miles) and parked.

Come out of shop, and simply won't start. Turns over at normal cranking speed.

The EML light is permanently on.

I'm thinking maybe crankshaft sensor, and surely can't be a drowned ECU, or can it?

Any comments welcome.

We have now walked home, and RAC will bring car back home, later this evening.

If its the crank sensor then your rev counter will not move at all when you turn her over - saying that am afraid the diesel ECU is prone to water damage as it is unsealed unlike the petrol ECU's. Worth having a look and even if dry if there is a tide mark to be seen . Also I have had 3 crank sensors go on my old ZT and none threw an EML?

The RAC arrived to pick up myself, and the keys.

En route I said that if by any strange chance it starts, then I have arranged for someone to drive the car home. Bearing in mind that my licence is still medically revoked.

The car started. Steve, our newish member was duly telephoned, drove round the corner; and brought me and the 75 back home.

RAC following. Nice RAC man (I think that was in their advert once) put fault finder on car, and then drove Steve back to the scene of crime; his 75 of course being there.

So result: Fault Code P1260 Pre Fuel Pressure Control.

Tomorrows another day. Jan's just poured me a drink.

Regards

Mike

Try taking the plug off the top off the under bonnet fuel pump. Put some Vaseline, not grease, onto the contacts on top of the pump, and push the plug onand off a couple of times. Then push it firmly back on.Now try starting again. Does it start?

No No No, pull electrical connector off yes, then spray contact cleaner into the electrical connector and reinsert the electrical connector into the plug, remove and reinsert, several times and that is all NO vaseline on the contacts.

Hi Mike.
The code P1260 will be the UBP pump timing out so don't focus on that to much, instead i would be checking the cam sensor, that is why the car started after a while because the cam sensor had cooled down enough, maybe drive it round the block a bit and back home turn it off and see if the car will start.

If not remove the cam sensor stick in the freezer for about 5 minutes then refit i bet the car will start.

5mm socket will remove the cam sensor

Thank you very much for your input Steve, especially the Rimmers link to the likely culprit.

As Jan is our sole driver at the moment, I don't want to risk her stranded anywhere, waiting for the cam sensor to cool down. Fortunately we keep both cars active, whilst using either one alternately.

In order to prove this fault, could I first of all put it in an oven, to establish failure, then freeze it to get going again. All on the drive.

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike.
I would not do that, it may well give you a fault reading and also damage the sensor altogether, just driving round your local area a few times lets say within ten 15 minutes walking distance should help to test the cam sensor.

only tuning the engine off when you get back on the drive leave for a few minutes roughly about the same time it happened.

Try and start the car if it does not start them remove and freeze it, don't just purchase a part before you have established it is the cam sensor.
Have you tried to start the car this morning yet, try and maybe let it tick over for 20-30mins and try it that way.

You have a message.

Thanks for the additional advice, and yes it started normally this morning.
I've seen your message, and will respond in the next few minutes.
Then I have a hospital appointment; won't be back home until well after dark.

Regards

Mike
