Question Tourer Tailgate Gas Struts

Has anyone thought up any preventative measure to stop the tailgate ripping the studs out of the body where the gas struts fit?

Is it worth fitting a large repair washer to spread the load to help prevent failure?

That is the normal fix in these situations. How small are your fingers 😃

Hi Richard,

My nearside strut mount caved in last summer and I rescued it by pulling the mounting pinball back into it's correct 'position' using "JB Weld epoxy" and a 38mm ss washer ground oval to slot in the gutter. Whilst the metal JB Weld was still soft, I tightened up the normal fixing nut and left it for 24 hrs to harden.

Someone else has already done it as an alternative repair to welding and sprayed the washer to match the cars colour. I have just left mine unpainted. A day or so later, I reinforced the offside before the bodywork was damaged. It's still holding well, and I feel safer when lifting the tailgate up.

Regards,

Geoff.
