Space Saver tyres
I've had it in mind since I've had the car to replace the space-saver with a full size wheel & tyre to match the unions. But I've been put off by comments on here that it doesn't fit with the tool tray.
Anyway, had a puncture for the first time last week and didn't like travelling around with the space-saver on while the other was being repaired so got a very good wheel & tyre from Scotland via eBay (maybe Neil Fraser is someone on here? - if so, thankyou) intending to keep it in the garage. Thought I'd check out the fit in the boot (tourer) and was surprised to find that it all seems to go in ok. Admittedly it was very snug but am I missing something, or putting a strain on the latch that will cause a problem over time? |

probably a very wise move, OEM space-savers mus be well past sell by date now.

All sizes of wheel fit the tourer with the surround tool tray, where the problem lies is when you try and fit a full size 18" alloy with the spare wheel cover.
The 18" tyre sits a bit too high and it is difficult to close the spare wheel lid. My cover sits little bit high and this is a 17" Serpent and tyre but the lid closes ok. It's the light grey cover in this picture. Dave T |

Hi Dave T,
I notice on your photo that the spare wheel locking screw is below the grey cover. Have you tried putting the locking screw 'above' the grey cover. i.e. locking the grey cover together with the wheel? From memory with mine (15" Comets) it is the inner side of the wheel that does not allow the grey cover to go all the way down into the centre of the wheel, resulting in it being too high up to prevent the false floor folding down completely. |
