Default Fuel Burning Heater model's

Hi,

I'm looking at replace my FBH as the one I have is on it's death bed.
The model number of mine is Thermo Top Z/C - D. Can anyone tell me the difference between that and a model number Thermo Top C, and will the latter fit in our cars? Thanks.

Regards
Gary

Smile FBH on deathbed

What is wrong with your FBH for you to make the above statement? It is a simple heater, but any one of various safety controls can stop it working.

The Thermo Top Z/C - D comes in two models for our diesel cars. The earlier has a serial number starting with "6" and the later one with a number "9". Do a search on the forum for FBH.

There are slight differences with the PCB's for each model, which are highlighted in the mountain of information from various contributors, showing anything you wish to do with your heater from an "almost coolant loss-free removal", through to a full strip down and "decoke", and not forgetting elec repairs to the PCB at a very reasonable price by Frenchmike.

There is information there for upgrading the controls from the baseline auto start below 5 degree's C to timers, remote control, and including starting the ATC

I am not sure whether the model you are suggesting to change to will fit anyway. From memory, it is much longer than the Thermo Top Z/C-D and probably won't fit anyway.

I see you have been a member of the Forum for over 3 years. Don't lose heart. With all the information and help available here from Forum members, you should be able to get your present FBH running again at much less cost than buying your suggested replacement, even if it will fit.

First thing to answer is " what is wrong with it"?
Has it ever worked previously?
What happened when it last worked?
Will it actually go into the pre-start check phase now?
Do the electronics need resetting with the under bonnet fuse F8 20 amps?
Does it complete the pre-start check and purge system? About three minutes.
See Frenchmikes graph showing the timing for the various components - waterpump, the FBH fuel pump, water flow, flame sensor etc kicking in and being checked as working. Faults with any one of these will stop the heater going into the main "firing up" stage

If it gets through this stage, can you hear the heater building up to full power?
Or does it make masses of smoke?

As stated earlier, Don't lose heart, Keep your present heater and sort it out.

Best of luck

Hello gbsh,

Glad to see you have seen my entry already. Which of my questions can you answer now, and what are the answers?

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
