Default Petrol versus diesel - refinememt

I've always driven petrol engined 75s and found them to be quiet, refined, squeak free and very comforting for my commute. My current 1.8t auto tourer with 55k is just lovely in this respect. Ive also got a bargain basement £300, manual CDT tourer with 194k. It's incredibly reliable, frugal and just seems to keep on going, and I love it for towing, tip trips, a bit of a workhorse really. However it lacks the refinement that I have enjoyed with the petrol cars and whenever I use it for the commute, I don't feel as well cosseted as I do in the 1.8t. I can cope with the additional engine noise but it tends to rattle and squeak, is generally noisier and the suspension although clunk free, is somehow less compliant than the petrol engined cars I've had.
Sorry to harp on but I'm looking to buy this

to replace my 1.8t, for my commute. The 1.8t is so lovely in every respect that I want to preserve it in the garage, with a few other old rovers! Is my diesel experience just the fact that my CDT is tired and probably past its best (although it passed it last mot with no advisories) or is this what I can expect?

You can expect to be disappointed

It doesn't really matter in terms of mileage covered covered in a diesel, in comparison to any of the petrol variants, they are coarse and uncouth.

I have a 66,000 mile one previous owner FSH diesel, and it's no quieter than any other diesel I've experienced.

The diesel makes a super tow car, and quite a relaxed long distance touring car, but that's about it.

No more reliable, in fact less so than any of the petrols

In short I can't see any point in binning the diesel tourer you currently have, in favour of the one in your link

Personally the best of the cars is the 2.0v6 auto, ive said it before over and over for sheer relax ment and comfort.

Personally I love the noise of a diesel on full chat, and I like the rattle of a diesel engine. If engine noise is such a big deal then I say for someone to buy a electric car lol.

Also wasnt the sound deadening reduced after project drive on ll the cars including diesels making the newer cars louder?

As already said, the diesels are uncouth unless cruising down the big roads, they love to eat up the miles with no effort at all - but that's where it ends, if you want a refined diesel then go for a beemer with the 3 litre six pot, smooth as silk and power to pull a house down, otherwise stick to a petrol MGR.

I'm in agreement with the above. The diesels are great engines, but not as smooth and great sounding as the v6!

I don't know why, as imo it's the equivalent of the Escort 1100.
Ie shockingly underpowered for an executive saloon.

I'd offer you a swap if you didn't have one of those estates

Why not invest in a pair of ear muffs when you drive the cdt.

I have to be honest, I've rather fallen out of love with the CDTi models.
They're refined enough (for a diesel) but the amount of PMs and parts I deal with for the diesel massively outstrips the petrol models (granted, I do sell a few K Series head gasket kits too).

I never thought I'd say this, but keep the 1.8T.

Well, I do like my diesel, we do a lot of m/way miles, (18k last year) but the way things are going it's not gonna be the best option. Already we're paying more for diesel than petrol, and some councils seem hell bent on taxing their use by way of levies and pollution taxes. Thinking ahead, I rather fancy a 1.8T. Are they as quiet as other petrol 75's?
