Did you check that the bottom pulley was lined up aswell as the cam pulleys?

Carl,

Is this a proven fact or an assumption because the engine stopped, your power steering became heavy and the 'battery charging' warning light illuminated?

In other words, do you have two broken auxiliary belts which you can actually see?

Put it back together, and put a new aux belt on, if the alternator is not turning, the engine wont fire up from experience.

Better to pay for the belt and pop it on than strip the engine for no reason. You'll need a new belt either way so as long as no remnants of the old belt were seen in the timing belt cover you should be ok.

My old 416si ate its aux belt and wouldnt start, put new belt on and was ok, until i wrote it off.

Default belts

Yes, I most definitely have two broken belts. One flew skywards, never to be seen again. The other shredded itself round the pulley. I will get a couple of new ones and see what happens. An easy job?

Default not starting.

But why would the engine not start because a belt has broken. My experience is that an engine will not charge and boil up. Can't see why it just shut down.

Yes, that's what you should do. You've already exposed the timing belt which is good, and you don't see any evidence of damage to the teeth. Check that the tensioner hasn't failed. Align the timing marks so that you can find out if the timing is correct or not.

There's no point in speculating about whether or not it should start with or without auxiliary belts. A tool kit and careful observation are your best diagnostic methods now.

Both belts went on my 1.8 one shredded round a pulley, I think the AA man said crankshaft pulley. AA man followed me to local garage , steering very heavy of course, and not charging, garage was a short distance away, both belts replaced in about an hour £60. Drive away !!

I cannot see any reason why an engine will not fire, if the aux belts are off.
I think you should show us a picture of the timing marks together with the pulley mark.
I have had alternator belt go taking the cam belt with it. Bent valves. I have had a cam belt go on an MGF, but the valves survived!

You have to check the timing marks properly.

Default Re timing

I will re-check, but, if the cam pulleys line up why would there be any reason why the crank wouldn't? If the belt jumped, they'd all be out of sync surely.
