Thanks for all the help. I am now going round the car checking other bits. If they have bodged something as potentially serious as this then what else?.
One thing I have noticed, lower grill lhs as you look at it there is a connector attached to something just dangling down. Any ideas what it could be?
Btw the temp has reset itself.

Hi John,
These units are actually pretty robust, so I would not think that you have damaged anything, more likely to be a poor connection ( Again!!) I agree that it probably will reset itself after a little use, if not take the instrument pack out again ( a lot easier the second time!!) and jiggle the plugs, do both, I cannot remember which one carries the connection you need, do this with the pack out of the dash so that you can try the plugs easier.

It's worth noting that if the airbag light is on the entire SRS system is disabled from working and you are using the car without its primary saftey sytem availible!!

NONE of the air bags and s/belt pre-tensioners will fire whatever angle or type of accident you have!!

I wonder what the insurance position would be if they found you you knew about it but hadn't had it repaired?? - just a thought! and anyway do you want to carry your nearest and dearest around in a car missing these items?? It might (probably/hopefully) not be you that causes a prang but if someone hits YOU your just as involved as he is !!

That was my concern also, a fault in the system stopping the airbags/pretensioners functioning as they should.
Now solved the issue and the system is working fine.
SRS light activation should be investigated ASAP, before driving the vehicle.
