Default Bangernomics

Gave up on new and nearly new depreciation and have been running bangers for a few years now (and I include my MGR cars) and have the mindset that a good reliable car with either long MOT or one that sailed through the last MOT is something to keep hold of as they provide almost free motoring. I've ended up with too many cars and not enough drive space plus my son is picking up his new car on Thursday and given me first refusal on his BMW 320d with 94k, everything working perfectly, full leather, bought from new by my dad in 2004. That will make 4 cars, plus his new one and all are working/driving well. Drive only really fits 3....... What to do? I've put an add up on FB for 3 of them and we'll see if any sell. Anyone else collecting??

I have more bangers than some scrapyards 😭 . I have never owned a brand new car and probably never will.

I cannot find any new(ish) car that I would want (if I could afford) these days.
Have however slimmed down the fleet from 25 to 16, and some more to go. I have at last realised that I can only drive one at a time, but it is nice to have a choice.

Well put, 99% of new stuff leaves me cold, yes they have some stuff that our older cars did not even know existed but do you really need most of it?

SWMBO came home a few weeks ago saying how amazing her mates new KIA was with its Bluetooth connectivity so she could send a text by talking. I then asked her how often she needed to send a text on the 2 miles drive to work 3 days a week? Her 14 year old Mini owes her nothing and apart from an annual service and a pair of tyres every 3 or 4 years it has to be one of the cheapest cars to run with some comfort ( A/C ) and decent turn of speed if needed.

A good friend test drove an AMG Merc 6.3 a few months ago, amazing performance and some toys that were incredible but £1000 for new front brakes and £1200 for a set of tyres every 4k and I suspect £100 or more a week depreciation. He earns a lot of money and he reckoned it was to rich for him.

I agree. I've no plans to ever get a new car. You want toys? You can add them for a fraction of the cost to whatever, and at least you can then keep them running without being ripped off by the dealer.

Yeah, cars around 15-20 years old are now so good and so cheap it seems foolish to buy newer! Just wish I had space for them all. Anyone want to buy a ZT-T, 320d, TT or MX-5 lol !

there is often no bragging rights when you own an older car
Some people buy new so they have or hope to have trouble free motoring as they know nothing about fixing a car, even checking the oil is beyond them.
There are also the mod cons and safety features you get with a new car but what I don't often hear on some forums is people saying what a pleasure it is to drive their car. They just mention the mod cons.

Last year my wife got a 64 plate Focus and years ago we got a 1 year old Honda Accord, after the Honda I said I'd never buy such a new car due to depreciation.

We need people to buy new, so us tight wads can buy second hand

The newest car I've owned was a Rover 420. Just 14 months old, ex fleet when I bought it. Depreciation meant it had halfed in value over that time.

I got a deal today on a 22 year old MX5 MK1, 56K 10 months MOT and the best bit £700.

I suspect if I put it on the bay I would double my money but no SWMBO will have some fun in it for a few months and see how it goes.
