i'm thinking maybe the ignition switch is acting up, i had to turn it 4 times before the engine started, then after turning the key off the engine kept dying but cranking on its own 4 times before it finally shut off. To my knowledge the high pressure pump has been done by the previous owner.

so a bad fuel pressure regulator would cause the engine not to crank at all? what about the fuel pressure sensors???

No the engine will happily crank with no fuel pressure on either the LP or HP side, but it won't start with insufficient fuel pressure because the ECM won't fire up the injectors.
