Distinct possibility, moving between gears on an outo is like turning off and trying again so it is likely

Thanks Dave, would it be possible to get the solenoid out while leaving the starter in situ on a diesel?

Well gents ( and Ladies ) what a great club. I took all the advice and the complete job took my son exactly 45 minutes. I went on e-bay and sent for a new plunger kit. It arrived overnight ( what service- highly recommended ). Mark took off the starter at 11.28 this morning. There are 2 bolts. One you can see and one you can't. The rear bolt screws directly into the starter. After a few minutes of fiddling passed the pipework the starter was free. Following the complete directions which came with the new plunger the starter was repaired in quick time. Mark put it back the way it came off and we turned the key at 12.13pm - many thanks to everyone again regards Dave

Just bought a kit - looked a useful spare to carry.

Just bought the kit as well, and talked to the guy who makes them. I just need to get the starter motor off now, and it's giving me grief.
