Distinct possibility, moving between gears on an outo is like turning off and trying again so it is likely

Thanks Dave, would it be possible to get the solenoid out while leaving the starter in situ on a diesel?

Well gents ( and Ladies ) what a great club. I took all the advice and the complete job took my son exactly 45 minutes. I went on e-bay and sent for a new plunger kit. It arrived overnight ( what service- highly recommended ). Mark took off the starter at 11.28 this morning. There are 2 bolts. One you can see and one you can't. The rear bolt screws directly into the starter. After a few minutes of fiddling passed the pipework the starter was free. Following the complete directions which came with the new plunger the starter was repaired in quick time. Mark put it back the way it came off and we turned the key at 12.13pm - many thanks to everyone again regards Dave

Glad to have helped. A lot cheaper than buying a new starter, isn't it!

Just bought a kit - looked a useful spare to carry.

Just bought the kit as well, and talked to the guy who makes them. I just need to get the starter motor off now, and it's giving me grief.

Hi im new here and have never posted but im havin the same problem mate. on one site it says the hidden bolt is a 13mm above left of the 15mm bellhousing bolt in between the manifold and battery. Undone that which then fell in somewhere and is now possibly sitting on the bellhousing, i cant find it and dont know what its purpose was. if its the 15mm one then im ******** if i can get in there to get it off. seriously getting wound up with it. cant move car and all i need is someone to say yep its that one. i can repair the plunger and refit if i only was positive its the right one.
As my dad says if its got **** tyres or tiles then its normally trouble
