Default Diesel cutting out after ubp change

I replaced my ubp the other day with a new pierburg unit. Since then my car won't start straight off. Or if it does it dies after half a second. If I let the ubp run a bit longer like maybe 15seconds on position 2 of the ignition and then start it starts fine. It always used to start straight off first turn without waiting for the ubp to run a bit. What have I done? Air leak on ubp or coincidence that something else is wrong maybe fuel rail o ring?

Why was the original pump changed......it wasn't leaking by any chance?

No not really, bit of black filth around that area but I changed it because it suddenly got extremely noisy. To the point where I could hear it over the engine. And with 208 000 on the car and at least 90 000 in my ownership I thought I should probably change it before it dies.

So it appears I have slight weeps on the top and bottom fuel pipes in and out of the pump. I did get the original new clips from Rimmers but no luck. Perhaps I will cut off a centimetre of each Pipe and try again to get a good seal.

You did remove the plastic inlet pipe protective cover before fitting the pump?

If not it has likely got stuck in the inlet pipe causing a partial blockage.

Oh OK, do you mean the plastic covers on the pump it comes with to prevent dirt getting in until the item is fitted? They definitely came off.

Yep those are the ones. Have come across this before when a pump was changed and it took a bit of investigating to get to the bottom of it.

Is the new pump running silently? They can get noisy if sucking air in due to a fault in the tank.

Try removing the outlet pipe from the UBP where it enters the fuel filter and place it in a large jar. With key to position II you should get a good strong flow of fuel into the jar with no entrapped air for 30 seconds or a minute, depending on which ECM you have fitted.
