Awesome polished alternator?

To me the most memorable sight at yesterday's meet at Yeovilton was not perhaps Actros’s bellow across the car park, nor Eric’s trip from Holland on half a crankshaft pulley - nor the “in-flight escape hatch” on Concorde (no, after you Cap’n) - but the sight of the engine bay of Cliff’s (Teflon) superb V6. In particular his shiny polished engine mount and alternator. I never knew you could polish up those? I don’t believe there’s enough Brasso in the whole of Zummerzet to achieve that?

So while it was great to put faces to funny names - and pick up some maintenance tips - I did creep away deflated by the sight of so many totally immaculate motors. I must try harder, much harder.

Me too, was busy trying to polish up the engine this morning, but it will never look that good.

I did but . . . sadly I don't think there are any short cuts, apart from polish, Brasso, polish, Brasso, polish, Brasso ad infinitum . . .

Take great care when polishing, not to drop abrasive materials into parts that rotate! Abrasive materials do not do bearings or internals any good.

Yup, that's about it I'm afraid. A dremmel can help speed things up a little, as does fine grade wire wool, but in the end it really comes down to time, patience, and sore fingers

Your quite right, of course, care must be taken. One other tip if using wire wool or any metallic tool, is to tape up the main connector to the alternator with insulating tape, otherwise you could get some nice blue sparks when the wire wool touches both the alternator body and the connector
