Default Not the prettiest of repairs

Dropped the under tray of the V6 Contemporary yesterday and was greeted by 3 pin holes in the exhaust downpipe. It looked like an expensive repair/replace and rather than let it get worse and sound like a 12 litre diesel, I got a mate to weld a patch and give it a longer life. Surprised something that gets hot and is protected got so rotten?

What do you call your mate.....Stevie Wonder

Never mind chicken poo welds, that looks like ostrich cack.

Not pretty is the understatement of the day, was he taught by the bloke who did this by any chance?

Perhaps I should have photographed the better side. Thankfully it’s covered by the under tray!

The pipes on the petrol engines get eaten away from the INSIDE by combustion gases. First thing you know is that there are holes.---

Mine is only 16 years old but all that unburnt oil keeps the pipes in perfect condition.---

Ah, welcome to the wonderful world of exhaust pipes — and welding...

Exhausts are consumables. They will fail sooner or later. As mentioned, they get eaten up both from the inside and the outside. Add to that the standard-type steel they’re usually made of and it’s only a matter of time.
There are stainless steel exhausts, though, which will last quite much longer. No idea which suppliers might offer them within range of you but do Google it.

As for welding — well, that’s what it looks like when you’re a beginner MMA welder. It takes quite a lot of time and practice to make it look nice, much more than one might think. Trust me, my welds still look pretty much like that, especially since I don’t practice every day. But on the other hand, MMA and gas welding are the only techniques you can use outdoors. MIG and the others give much nicer welds but you can’t do it outside. So, as long as it holds, pat your welding buddy on the shoulders and buy him a couple of beers!

(Incidentally, you can use a lot to fix exhaust pipes with. An empty beer can and a couple of clamps, for instance, has been used by more than one.(
