Universally used - before all the manufacturers in the world went to torx type heads. Its all to do with multi head fitting machines and saving time, plus point was it probably saves weight and thus some cost too.

Being aluminium, it would be the coarse thread pitch wouldn't it ?

Probably, but best to take a good bolt with you to confirm the thread size and pitch when you are buying the tap.
