Its not just the oil type or make up, but the ACEA oil rating. 190 especially needs a higher rated oil.

For all 2.0 and 2.5 none 190 engine, and 10/40 with ACEA A2:96 and use a 10W/40 oil meeting specification ACEA A3 for a 190.

I have one on 0W 40 and one on 5W 40 both synthetic; I like the idea of the lower 'W' rating as the viscosity is far more even through the temp ranges. Mind on my minis that means they leak!

However, it should be noted that these publications are now at least a decade old. The handbooks also take into consideration what is readily available at the time.
Today, if you were to key in your engine details and ask companies such as Castrol, Mobil or Shell for their recommended oil for a KV6 engine, they would recommend their 0w40 or 5w40 oils.

It is not just about minimum temperatures on start-up, but also the viscosity from ambient to operating temperature.

If I were using an engine for shorter runs, I would be looking for an oil to give better protection during the warm up phase from ambient to engine operating temperature. This is because it would spend more time proportionally in comparison to a car used on long motorway runs.

I would choose a 5w40 or 0w40 in this case.
Phew, thanks for that. I went to get some from my local auto store and their system said 5w40 or 10w40. I got 5w40 as it was a better brand (Petranos) to their own brand which was 10w40, and then read my hand book when I got home and panicked. Makes total sense what you say, so I have stopped panicking

I don’t know whats in the handbook or what may of changed since but in the early 90’s when we tested the first KV6’s and others we used unipart red 10/40 and never had a failure attributed to the oil. Those engines were hammered in ways you can’t do on the road.

I'm very happy with AMSOIL 5W-40, both on startup and in hot weather running.
