There should be somewhere in Norton to add trusted sites or locations within either Internet preferences or within firewall settings. I'm not sure which but somewhere there is an option to allow the computer to accept incoming requests from a location (ie the IP address). Same goes for outgoing connections on the same PC. Then do the same on the other PC and you ought to be fine.

I've rolled both machines back to make a fresh start. For some strange reason, I can't disable the WiNXP firewall on one. Both buttons are greyed out......
Any ideas on this...?

It maybe that you are not logged in as an Administrator or you do not have administrator privileges which are required for Firewall tasks.

Hmmm.... <strokes imaginary beard and makes perplexed expressions>
Could it be Norton is set to handle all firewall operations (included XP's) and so there maybe an option within Norton to allow XP's firewall to be controlled. Not sure if this is possible though but worth a shot. If not that then it could be XP Home being a bit on the silly-side. You may have to give yourself extra permissions and see if that helps. Although, this step shouldn't be needed but there is an extra admin level not normally accessible in Windows environments. There maybe another (more obvious) solution but I can't think at the moment. An idea may come to me or another member may also help..... |

The mad thing is, I've turned it off on one machine, but the other won't let me.................and I'd turned it off once already tonight.
I think XP is having a funny 5 minutes....Time for a reboot

Time to get rid of Norton if you ask me!!! It gives far more trouble then it is worth, just watch how your PC's will speed up once it is removed, loads of free stuff around that is far better then anything Symatec has ever produced!!! (just my humble opinion of course )

yup, ditch Norton and grab AVG or similar.
Its been 4 years since I touched Noton (sorry, Norton) and I cant even really remember what the features are and how to config them. It doesnt say anything about being controlled by Group Policy at the top of the Firewall settings (in XP Firewall) does it? If you're still having problems, reboot, hit F8 and start as Safe Mode You'll see a real 'Administrator' account to which the password is usually blank unless you set it during XP set up. Log in to this account and try and change the firewall settings then. |

If you fancy going down the zero config route, "Bonjour" is as easy as it gets.
