Our compensators certainly fail, but you have to apply the handbrake, and at worst, it may roll a bit.

Electrics may well be protected, but I am far from having complete faith in their reliability. Had too many electrical connectors, and components fail on things to trust them fully. I assume that the handbrakes natural position is 'ON', and so a loss of power for any sort of problem would result in the brake being applied. I know I'm off topic and the chances are very very small, but I'd prefer mechanical to electronic.

Just realised my neighbour has a '13 plate insignia, in a colour very similar to X-Power grey, he doesn't seem to have had any problems. Not that I know which engine it is. The other neighbour with the '11 Passat bluemotion however has had to have it taken to the dealers twice in the last 6 months. Can't remember what it was for, but it wasn't cheap, and he's not the sort to abuse a car.

There isn't much excuse for not keeping water out of connectors nowadays. Of course, cost is the driving dark force.

You'll find many more mechanical items fail on anything than the electronics. Most electronics are blamed when a mechanical failure of some sort occurs, relays or seals etc.

Don't forget the engineering time and safety considerations put in to any product made today. Our cars certain got a good going over.

I'd have a Monaro, or maybe an Omega V6 for cheap. My brother had a cheap one for a while, good fun and plenty of similarities.

read this tread with interest, all opinions are valid opinions of course.

I had a diesel insignia estate for about 4 weeks when the 520 d was being straightened out. it was a very good car in all respects and compares well ( in my opinion) to ZT cdti.maybe the engine was a bit more harsh, but the cabin refinements were far superior.

No sure I would want one for the 30 to 40k of business miles I do each year hence a 520 -(which is soon to be replaced by an A6 Avant diesel) sits next to the MGs on the drive.

I like the look of the Insignia, stylish and the interior looks very inviting.

It's better looking than the Mondeo (I think) but from what I have read doesn't drive quite as well as the Ford.

After reading this thread I've just spent a bit of time on autotrader looking at cars that are out of my price range now, but that I could afford in a few years. So far the only thing that has an interior I could go as far as saying I like, is this:

I know 1 day I'll have to have a car with this, but with how sensors etc can just break suddenly, I'd always be slightly worried part of the electronic handbrake may just brake locking it on while driving down the motorway....

As for the insignia, I've never been in 1, but the styling is slightly more inspiring than the mundano. Personally think it looks very similar to the MG6, which, if MG keep a presence in the UK long enough, will probably be my next car.
just ask a by passat owner about electric handbrakes

got to say considering our cars are getting on they are still hard to beat, can you imagine if the company was still going there would possibly be a coupe which i think we all liked and who knows what they would have on them now ,i cant think of one but has any other cars have an electric blind ,or a shape of a car that a lot of people love.
