we told them we do not want any money, we just want an apology, a "we messed up and were sorry, this is what we have done to ensure it cant happen again"

Pete, I fully understand your concept and purpose, however there will never be any apology from them, they would only go as far as accepting negligence. Thus compensation will be the only form of apology you could ever get. They really have no soul at all. So in principle the £ wont cut the mustard or replace the loss, but they will have a loss to bear financially, and this day and age money talks ! My Mum will have some stability, in the absence of Dad.
This sounds like money grabbing, but it really is'nt. Shes lost a business, a brilliant house and a loved one due to inept staff who treat humans how they like. Even domestic animal owners can be arrested for mis treating a dog!
So whilst the NHS waste their resources on inept staff, management who can't manage a bath and so on, the way forward is to bring a case, and work it in to them hard hard and harder to put their monies wasted on dirt, into a more deserved and tourchered hand.
Sorry folks, just how we see it.
Good luck with your case Peter.

I see that the problem of undertray fixings is not a new one then....
