Default Rover 75 diesel.. smelly exhaust/engine emissions

Hello, Rover 75 diesel… recently the car has seemed quite smelly which we thought was due to the exhaust, as the back box had a split in it.
We’ve had the exhaust replaced but we still get a bad exhaust type smell inside the car.
Actually seems a slightly different/stronger smell than from the exhaust.
Engine runs ok but maybe sounds a bit noiser than it used to.
So from reading the forums i was thinking it could be two things.. exhaust gas leaking before the CAT (the flexi pipe or the EGR pipes), or a diesel leak?
We think the flexi pipe is ok and I’ve had a look at the pipes near the EGR and can’t see any signs of leakage (black soot).
Is there any area in particular that would be the most common cause that we could look at?
Any ideas where to start looking would be much appreciated.
Thankyou for any help..

Possible flexi pipe. I had the same issue last year and the flexi looked okay but soot on the cross member was a clue. I started the engine when the undertray was off and the car on a set of ramps and pushed the exhaust up by the flexi and it got louder ! I cut out and fitted a new flexi and the noise and fumes were no more ! Also check for soot under the bonnet around the EGR metal pipes first before heading to the floor incase it has split.

blocked PCV filter or an injector not fully seated can cause this issue too.

Myself would check the connection to the EGR under the bonnet, even if the EGR is not used/blocked off. The exhaust is still connected to that position/pipe.
Had this already on a couple of 75s and making sure the connection is tight solved this source of exhaust fumes.

Fully agree with that PCV very often over looked, and injector not seated down correctly,

A change in the actual smell can indicate a faulty catalyst. This can cause hydrogen sulphide in the exhaust, which develops the characteristic smell of bad eggs.

Ok, thankyou for all the replies, very useful, i will get these things checked.. (and no it doesn't smell like bad eggs, just stronger than a normal diesel exhaust smell).

I had a weep from one of the HP pipes from the common rail to the injectors - whip the engine top cover off and see if there are any pools of diesel.

Look for wetness on the front part of the front subframe could indicate leaks from the hp (high pressure) fuel pipes or pump or leakback pipework.
