Hi Stan.
I wouldn't sat its the official way of doing it but it certainly helps as 99.9% of the time that top nut is solid on the thread with years of rust, unless drop links that only last 12months or less are fitted then you stand a chance.

The original have some good flats that you can get a spanner onto, so if you have remove the bottom fixing first you can wind out with the flat.

1

This same to tightening up
2

Always add some extra grease.
3

4

Look for drop links that have weld all round the joint
5

Decent flats on them
6

7

I have tried all sorts of drop links and most will last if extra grease is added

This weekend I've finally been able to bend and be flexible enough to carry out an oil and filter change.

Who ever tightened up the oil filter housing must of been a body builder!
I had to use a knuckle bar to get the damn thing undone! I was scared I was going to break it!

When I did get it off and retrieved the old oil filter , it had been partially crushed. Instead of being located properly, it had been rammed in and then the top tightened down!

I swapped out a cleaned up EGR valve as well.
I cant believe the difference this has made to how the car pulls away!

Richard

Didn't lose much coolant removing it and was surprised how little gunk came out before it started flowing hot again. Don't think it takes much to block them.

Done an oil and air filter change no No. 1 saloon. Then checked the plenum - all clear. Time to get this wagon back on the road for winter.🙄

Washed checked all the fluids on both R40 & FL2, they are both ready for the weeks duty.
