Default Email POP3 changed to IMAP, help

I was having problems with my Microsoft emails last night. For some reason last night outlook could not retrieve my emails on my pc.
This morning on one of my email accounts I am getting the following massage.


Your mail server has been updated. The mail server protocol has switched from POP3 to IMAP. To use the new server protocol you must create a new account with this email address. your contacts and email messages will not be lost.



How and why did this happen? If I look into the BT website I can access my emails.
Can it be changed back and if so how?

No idea what the problem was but I deleted the email account from outlook and re-entered it using all the original information and it seems to have worked

Pop3 is a very outdated protocol and only allows messages to be downloaded (Although technically you can send emails via it). IMAP is much better as it allows you to sync, as well as view emails without storing them locally.
