Alloy Wheel Protection

I have just spent a bit of time cleaning the Alloys on my car with Bilberry Alloy Cleaner, and they have come up really well. I know that there are protection coats that you can spray or wipe on to keep them looking good for longer, but have just done a search on Google, a whole plethora of products came up.

Has anyone got any recommendations for ones they have used and that work.

Armorall came out best in the Auto Express test earlier this year, and having used it, I can vouch that the brake dust just rinses off after a week. Have treated mine only once since April. Great stuff, but you have to leave it for at least an hour after spraying before driving.

I use simoniz alloy wheel seal. Its a spray, got load of cans last year when tesco sold it for £1.50

A good level of protection using any decent wax or sealant should be sufficient to keep alloys nice and clean, provided the brake dust isn't allowed to build up too much. In my case, I use Collinite 476s - the same as I use on the bodywork. It works just as well as any of the specialist products and helps keep costs down.

I also take it a stage further and take the wheels off once a month to clean and protect the backs of them. They come up like new with just a wipe over with normal car shampoo (plus a top up of the wax coating). I may just have too much time on my hands.

that is interesting. I have just bought some Collinite 476 for the body, but never thought of using it on the wheels. I really must get into the habit of doing a full clean of the wheels every once in a while. I'm sure it saves a lot of time and effort in the long run.

Once you've got a good layer of protection on, keeping them clean should be a breeze. The trick is to not let them get too dirty between washes.

MWMan save yourself some money and use the wax you have. Colonnite will do the job fine. It's a protection so it does the job. Main thing is to clean the wheels regularly and keep on top of it. The wax will potentially last up to a few months. No harm topping it up every month or two but keep the wheels clean. You don't want to wax it on dirty wheels. It makes the cleaning process easier for next time. So when cleaning wheels again, don't use the bilberry cleaner otherwise it will strip the protection. Just use soapy water as you would do when you wash the car and the dirt should just ease off.

Erm, I could possibly be guilty maybe of occasionally cleaning the back of my wheels. In my defence the wheels I have on are much better looking when clean
