Heckflosse
Hi all, My neighbour has had a 66 Mercedes 200D heckflosse (fintail) in his barn for best part of 5 years that I know of. He has offered to my lad to use as his first car for a year or 2 until he gets his own.
He wants a Mustang (Yeah right! but he won't listen to a grumpy old *** like me, good job too!) So I'll try and let you have some photos as we extract her and see what needs to be done. She looks to be 100% complete did have an MOT and an engine rebuild so lets hope the chassis etc is OK. anybody know what a current spec replacement for 10/20 or 20/20 oil is? Cheers Ian |

Oooh a Jarman Zephyr I quite like those as Mercs go, very solidly built & very simple reliable underpinnings, my mate had a couple of those & there's also a German fella lives about 12 miles from here who specialises in them

I knew you'd know! Thanks.
Bought a new battery today so we will see what happens this weekend. I'll try and find a spanner for the front pulley to turn her over a couple of times first. Any other suggestions would be welcome, pre-start. Ian |

Put the new battery on. Pull the cable to the coil. Pour the new oil in (after changing the old and the filter). Wait a minute and then turn it over on the starter for a few short periods. Should be ready after that. Did this with the motor in my 1956 Volvo PV after it had been layed up for a number of years. This was 14 years ago. Motor still running sweetly

If he uses it for time trials etc it is probably a 544 model with a B18 motor (one piece windscreen). 1958 - 66. Mine is the more sedately, earlier model 444 from 1956. They had -split- screens both front and rear till 1955 when they put a one piece back window in but kept the split windscreen (mine). Then one piece both front and rear from 1958. Mine is the standard model -K- for 1956. There was a -Special-. KS. This was packed with extras..... cig lighter and a sun blind on the passenger side as well as the drivers
6 volt of course (good old Bosch). 12 volt didn´t turn up untill they introduced the B18 motor in 1962. Mines black (a la Henry Ford), only the standard model. No -chrome strips- down the sides. Had a -K- model which I was over in UK with in 78. The starter motor soleniod packed in while I was there. My dad said that we could try the main Volvo dealer in Bournemouth. I was dubious. We got there and I explained to the immaculate turned out mech that the soleniod had probably gone. -No probs sir, get it fixed in a jiffy- he says. Yeah sure. -It´s 6 volt- I says. -Can´t be sir, they never made any 6 volt ones- There was about 25 people around it, 2 offers to buy it. Remember that the first Volvo model to be sold in UK was the Amazon (B18, 12 volt). They kept it for the day and we went back the following morning. Guy was very upset. -It works on the bench but can´t get it to perform on the car. No bits of course. Only time ever that Volvo haven´t charged me for work/labour done on my cars When I got back to Gothenburg it actually started on the key on the boat. Had to keep it going as it was -15 C outside and I daren´t turn it off. Unfortunately the exhaust had holed out just rear of the front pipe, on the M3, so it was making a bit of a racket. The policeman on the gate shouted at me to turn it off. Told him the started had gone. Told me to push off in a jerky movement as he kept waving with his hands Got all the way back to Stockholm with it without a hitch. Parked it on a slope. Next day took it to an auto electrician and he renovated the starter the same day. And yes, I´ve got 2 renovated starter motors in the garage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_PV444/544 This wikipedia description is not entirely accurate. Thanks Phil
I couldn't think of anything else other than that. In the end I gently towed it backwards in reverse a few feet with my tractor in low box to turn it over slowly, turned her over 3 times once or twice and then went for it with preheat. Nearly started and then refused to turn over at all? fiddlesticks thinks I and assumes the battery was poorly charged as the starter slowed noticeably on the last attempt. I gave it 30 mins on boost and tried again, nothing and then resorted to bashing the starter motor with a big spanner (much to my 17 year old's amazement! Bingo, full preheat and off she went almost immediately! Most things work except indicators and wipers and most importantly you can't select reverse! I'll have to trace the coloumn change mechanism and see if it's lost the plot somewhere! Photos/video soon, courtesy of 17 year old's video editing skills. Ian |
