Default quiery about batteries for diy tools

I am of the opinion that if you rarely use a tool, then mains powered is better then battery as rare use may not do the battery any good.

Am I right or way off the mark?

I'm thinking of an impact wrench and I really don't expect it use it frequently once a job is completed.

Clarke do a 710nm mains powered for £107.98 model CEW1100
only draw back is that it's 3/4 inch.

You are correct, battery tools like to be used.

But.. keep them in the house away from the cold and all will be good.

only battery tool I have is the cordless drill and yes, that stays in doors.

I'll go with mains power.

I have a battery powered drill and my late Father bought that for me 18 years ago and it still works fine.
All you have to do is keep it indoors as Trikey said.

My take is that unless being cordless is a requirement - i.e. using where there's no mains power or to use extensions would be difficult or too awkward then use a mains powered tool - cheaper to buy and generally more powerful in use. And you never worry if you'll have enough charge to finish a job.

Cordless tools are great for small jobs - especially unplanned ones where you just want to pick up the tool and use it. The Li-ion batteries don't like to get cold though so the advice to bring your batteries and charger in the house is good advice - at least through the winter months.

P.S - I use my cordless drill driver all the time - but my impact driver is clarke mains powered 450 Nm and does a fine job.

It depends on the tool in my opinion.

I've got a cordless drill that is used most of the time, and an impact driver that gets a hard life. I've also got a cordless 3/8" impact driver which is great for removing stubborn nuts & bolts (once you've 'cracked' them with a bar or similar first). All of these are li-ion and seem to last ages.

For larger holes or ones into hard concrete I do have big corded drill. Also have a range of corded sanders, saws etc. But also adding to air tool range as well.

Air tools....mmmmm, I bought some but running up the compressor (270 litres and 2x3 3hp motors) is more faff then its worth. I just don't use them enough to warrant it, the shotblaster, that does need the compressor so I don't mind running it up. Probably cheaper to pay someone to shot blast but I don't care, I have fun doing it my self and what price enjoyment?
