Default Engine Light - Glow Plug Sensor

Hi all, after a bit of advice. Had my clutch changed after the slave went pop on me. got it back from the garage with the engine light on. My mate who owns the garage, said diags had it as glow plugs, yet the car starts fine. He tried turning off the light to no avail.

So my questions are: if it was working fine (no engine light) before the clutch change, why is light on now?
When I first turn the key, the glow plug light comes on for a second if that.

Plenum drain is dry as a bone - first job I did when I bought the car and joined the club! So ruling out glow plug sensor.

The only thing different - the car was bump started to the garage - ie get to right revs then slip into gear if you know what I mean.
Have I knocked a sensor whilst 'bumping'?
I've read also that the 'glow plug' reading could be a red herring and its more likely cam sensor?


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forget the glowplug relay fault - they all do that.

If you had a faulty cam sensor then the car wouldn't start, and it isn't covered by the check engine light.

Check the LP fuel pressure sensor plug connection - it sits on top of the fuel filter just inboard of the battery.

If that is OK check the HP fuel pressure sensor plug connection - it sits on the end of the common fuel rail.

If they check out then it could be due to a faulty throttle demand pot.

Did your check engine light come on as a self test with key to position II before this fault? If so there are a couple of other possibilities.

Hi Mike, yes the Engine light would come on, but then extinguish after self test.
As I said, all was fine until the clutch change, and the car starts & drives perfectly which is the annoying part.

Hi there,

The reason the EML comes on is mainly emissions related, okay if your car is a diesel variant, I would check the sensor plug located on top of the fuel filter housing I would also check all the other electrical sensors, I.e. map sensor located on the end of the intake manifold and if yours is a facelift I would also check the boost temp sensor located on the intercooler pipe before it meets the EGR,
A faulty EGR can also cause the EML to come on. I had one only the other day that had this issue, but it did suffer from hesitation Image shown below is from my T4, indicating 4 faults stored with the EGR


In your case I would suspect it’s more likely that the fuel filter sensor has not been fully pushed home, as when the sensor is not fully pushed home it bypasses the safety parameters of the high-pressure pump.

Nice one Mick, never thought to try the LP sensor so will check that tomorrow. Would make sense also, as everything in that vicinity will have been disturbed/moved when the clutch was done. I would probably also explain why when he's tried to extinguish, it wouldn't go out.
