St. Patrick's Day honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. We celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17. Americans march in parades, dance the Irish jig and gather to sing Irish songs. People wear green in memory of Ireland, the Emerald Isle and wear shamrocks, clover with three leaves.
March 17 was not the day St. Patrick was born but the day he died. Even though we don't know the date of his birth, most scholars believe the year was 385 AD and the year of his death was 461 AD. St. Patrick was born in Wales, studied religion to become a priest and then went to Ireland to teach the people about God. There are many wonderful stories about St. Patrick, some true and some not true. The most famous legend is that he drove the snakes out of Ireland. This did not happen but the Irish will tell you that you cannot find a snake throughout the whole country of Ireland. |

Sadly my Uncle (my Dad's only surviving brother) dropped down dead at a St Particks day party in the Knights of St Columba club yesterday. We'll joke about it in years to come I'm sure, but last night turned into a nightmare. He was so like my Dad, they could have been twins, it's almost like losing my dad again, to be honest I don't think my Uncle rreally got over my Dad going first (uncle was the older, he was 81), he had a great life, lived it to the full til the very last minute, he'd been up singing (my whole family are singers) he'd came off the stage and said to my aunt that he felt he hadn't been very good. She said don't be daft and the next thing he was on the floor. What a way to go. RIP Uncle Eddie, he's with my Dad now, they'll be trying to out sing each other.
