I still use Vista on one of my machines, I like Vista, and I use MSE.

Windows 10 can be downloaded from Microsoft here. You'll need to make a installation USB, as you're starting from Windows Vista.

Install instructions are here. The exception (Important!) is that you do not enter your product key during installation - wait until it's all installed and asks you to activate.
if I get the windows 7 key do I need a windows 10 license, I have a windows 7 desk top, can I retrieve my key and use your link to download windows 10 to my desk top? you will get to see I have not a clue of what to do and the thought of downloading and installing fills me with dread

The Windows 7 key is the windows 10 licence, it will be automatically converted when you enter it.
Although phyiscally you can use the one off your desktop, legally you shouldn't.

You can use your desktop to download and create the USB, though if you're not confident I would give it a miss.

I wouldn't use Avast since this company's policy with clients' data is not clear. If I am not mistaken there was a scandal with Avast not long ago about that. They were caught red-handed selling their clients' data.

Instead I would choose preinstalled solution by Microsoft - Security Essentials. I saw some testing on the web and this free solution was not inferior to Avast, Nod 32 and some other anti-viruses. Also I recommend to install No-Script addon to your browser (if you use FF).

UPD: By the way if you need some more information about security I strongly recommend to read this company's blog https://www.digitalforensics.com/ The other day I stumbled upon some really interesting articles about online blackmail (it is on the rise) and about the signs to see if your computer has been hacked or not.
