Auto engine locking
How do I lock the engine so I can undo/redo the crankshaft pulley bolt in my automatic V6? Obviously the old trick of putting it in gear and getting someone to stand on the brakes won't work!!

The proper tool is best which is quite a beast, but an expensive option so a visit to a member who has one is probably the best.
The alternative is to fabricate a half reasonable flywheel locking tool (Not the best method) ! Finally drop off the starter and lock the flywheel with a good pry-bar, but remember the crank pulley bolt is done to a specific torque and worth paying attention to this. Good luck - JohnH. |

I am not recommending this but it worked for me, use the method at your own risk.

A good socket with with an outrageous extension would too! An industrial size pneumatic wrench. Turning the starter with a fixated socket on the nut works too, but you need to be careful. Works a treat though!

I knew it was too good to be true. I have found the Sealey tool (VS1292) on 3 websites. Three times I have ordered and paid only to receive a refund with a message saying this item is no longer available!!!!
I have ordered a DeWalt impact wrench which should undo the pulley bolt. I have also been talking to Shiner (Andy) and he tells me that its safe to use the driveplate locking tool (the steel pin that fits in the hole in the gearbox casing to lock the engine in the safe position) to tighten it up again to the required torque. I know a lot of people on here say this isn't safe but if Andy reckons it is, and does this himself, I think I'd be OK doing it. Can't see it being any more risky than sticking a screwdriver in the flywheel teeth, which is advocated often!!!! Last edited by ballymenaman; 16th September 2016 at 13:26.. |

My barrer y impact wrench took out that bolt nicely and putting an appropriate torque stick on the impact let me torque it down to the right amount of force.
