Default over heating?

Hi,
Just had a strange problem with my ZT 1.8.
Doing around 70mph.. The high temperature ligh came on, pull over straight away and the enging returned straight to normal !!
This happened twice on the short run i was doing.. Around town in traffic no problems.
Temp in car heaters is ok with no problems.
I have noticed with the car stopped the radiator is cool to touch and the expansion tank is hot ?
Any ideas..
Thanks for the help.
Andy.

Don't use the car for the mo' and let everything cool down then check the coolant level and oil as a starter for ten - sorry if that granny and eggs How long have you had the car and how often do you check the coolant level? Have a good search on the forum for overheating etc as it's easy to jump to conclusions that it's HGF when it's not. Let us know you're findings.

Favourite leaky places in the K18T are the pressure cap (common to all) and the plastic T-piece just behind the radiator (top). A metal Gerry_T is highly recommended.

Default update..

Water levels and oil all ok.
engine and pipes all red hot when running radiator cold?
no emulsion in the water or oil.
just take her for a slow dive in to town and back.
both upper and lower radiator hoses solid, with the radiator fan running all the time once the engine is warmed up.
Also noticed when i stop the car in the town then restarted the car there was a water slooshing nosies from the engine area.. also when the car was stopped at home the expansion tank was hissing???
I think there is a blockage in the radiator or the Head gasket is gone / gasses are getting in to the water and gas locking the system if this makes any sense!!
The car has one of these after maket warrenties with it so all is not lost..
so will give to them to sort out..

I'll stand corrected but I'm not sure the "T-piece" is applicable to the non-turbo 1.8 Your fan should only be running all the time at low speed with the aircon on. If it's running all the time without the aircon on then there is a prob somewhere. When I had hgf the car was struggling for power, the heater packed up, needle was at max and I had mayo under the cap. This happened quite quickly. If you have none of this then you may indeed have a blockage. If it's under warranty get it back to fix. Also it's worth considering getting them to upgrade to the MLS gasket - better still you buy and supply to make sure it gets fitted!

A late '04 1.8 has the T-piece cos it has a PRT. An '02 doesn't.
